A histaminic reaction caused by ingesting spoiled fish of suborder Scombroidea—e.g., Scomberesocidea family—saury, skipjack, maki-maki, dolphin, tuna, bonito, seerfish, butterfly kingfish, and mackerel; these fish have free histamine in muscle which is decarboxylated when infected by Proteus spp; if the infection is intense, oral antihistamines or activated charcoal may be used to reverse the histaminic effect
