Tolna

 

a megye (county) in Hungary, on the right bank of the Danube. Area, 3,600 sq km. Population, 252,000 (1972). The city of Szekszárd is the administrative center. Tolna’s economy is chiefly agrarian and industrial; land cultivation predominates. The principal crops are wheat, corn, barley, oats, rye, sugar beets, flax, hemp, tobacco, and cotton. Horticulture, grape growing, and pig and sheep breeding are practiced, and the extensive meadowlands of the Danube Valley support dairy farming. Coal mines and quarries are located in southern Tolna. Industry is represented by machine building and the production of foodstuffs, textiles, and leather goods and footwear.
