On NE border of CA and NV; organized Mar 18, 1854, from Butte County. Name Origin: Spanish 'feathers,' for the Feather River, once known as Rio de las Plumas. Named by John A. Sutter, first settler in the Sacramento Valley, for the quantities of feathers found all around it with which the Indians decorated themselves and made blankets.
