(full name, Institute of Spectroscopy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR), a research institution at which work on optical spectroscopy is conducted. The institute was established in 1968 in Akademgorodok, Podol’sk Raion, Moscow Oblast, from the laboratory of the Commission on Spectroscopy of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

The principal areas of research at the institute are atomic, molecular, solid-state, and laser spectroscopy and the design of spectroscopic instruments. As of 1975, research projects had been conducted on the spectroscopy of highly ionized atoms and elec tronic transitions of complex molecules and on high-resolution nonlinear spectroscopy. The physical principles underlying laser methods for isotope separation and the production of ultrapure substances were worked out at the institute. It has developed new techniques for the spectroscopic analysis of the chemical composition and structure of substances.
