transverse wave n (General Physics) a wave, such as an electromagnetic wave, that is propagated in a direction perpendicular to the direction of displacement of the transmitting field or medium. Compare longitudinal wave trans′verse wave′ n. a wave in which the direction of displacement is perpendicular to the direction of propagation. [1920–25] trans·verse wave (trăns-vûrs′, trăns′vûrs′) A wave in which the particles of the wave's medium move at right angles to the direction of wave movement.
