scotch boiler scotch boiler[′skäch ′bȯil·ər] (mechanical engineering) A fire-tube boiler with one or more cylindrical internal furnaces enveloped by a boiler shell equipped with five tubes in its upper part; heat is transferred to water partly in the furnace area and partly in passage of hot gases through the tubes. Also known as dry-back boiler; scotch marine boiler (marine usage). |
