Rhön
Rhön
a mountain massif in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The massif is approximately 80 km long. Its base is composed primarily of sandstones and limestones. Domelike peaks reach 950 m in elevation (Mount Wasserkuppe) and are composed of basalts and other volcanic rocks. Many rivers cut through the Rhön Mountains. There are beech forests, meadows, and peat bogs in the mountains. Mineral springs are located in the foothills; the Bad Kissingen and Bad Brückenau health resorts are in the FRG, and the Bad Salzungen health resort is in the GDR.
