Ulan Daban

(also the Humboldt Range), a mountain range in China, in the Nan Shan system. The Ulan Daban Range is about 250 km long and rises to elevations of 5,300-5,400 m. The range towers 1,000-2,000 m above the surrounding plateau, is weakly dissected, and is crossed by passes at elevations above 4,000 m. It is composed primarily of sedimentary rocks. Glaciers are found on the slopes; the vegetation is of the cold desert type. The Ulan Daban Range was named the Humboldt Range in 1880 by the Russian explorer N. M. Przheval’skii in honor of the German scientist A. von Humboldt.
