U Lat

 

Born 1866 in Rangoon; died 1921 in Nyaunghla. Burmese writer; one of the first Burmese novelists.

U Lat was an expert in the Pali language and in English and ancient Burmese literatures. During the years of English rule, he was an official in the police department. His first published works were poems. In the novels Jasmine (1910-14) and Lord of the Golden Land (1914; Russian translation, 1963), he accused the Burmese intelligentsia and aristocracy of anglomania and advocated that Burma’s youth be educated in a nationalist spirit.
