pluteus[′plüd·ē·əs] (invertebrate zoology) The free-swimming, bilaterally symmetrical, easel-shaped larva of ophiuroids and echinoids. Pluteus the larva of a sea urchin or ophiuran. A pluteus has paired appendages, or arms, inside which are calcareous skeletal needles. The larva swims by means of its arms, which are fringed with ciliated epithelium.
