Plutong

(Polish płuton, from French peloton, “platoon”). (1) The lowest subunit in the ranks and in battle formation of the Russian infantry in the 18th century, introduced by Peter I. It corresponded to a platoon.

(2) A group of guns of the same caliber on a ship placed so that they could be directed by voice and fire simultaneously on the same target. It corresponded to the present-day battery. The term plutong remained in use until the early 20th century.
