Singanpur

a village in Raigarh District, in the state of Orissa, India, near which the British explorer S. W. Anderson discovered two caves with agate plates and wall drawings in 1910. The drawings, which were done in red ocher, depict ritual dances and hunting scenes. Schematic human figures armed with spears alternate with the realistic representations of such animals as bulls, wild boars, deer, and kangaroos (?). Indian scholars believe that the drawings date from the middle of the first millennium B.C., but the presence of stone implements that appear to be of Mesolithic origin suggests an even earlier date, of the third or second millennium B.C.
