Uslar Pietri, Arturo

(ärto͞o`rō o͞os`lär pyā`trē), 1906–2001, Venezuelan novelist and essayist. Uslar Pietri is considered one of the most powerful regional writers in modern Spanish-American letters. His masterpiece is the historical novel Las Lanzas coloradas (1931; tr. 1963, The Red Lances), a vivid depiction of the Venezuelan campaign of Simón Bolívar. Among his nearly 50 other works are Red (1936) and Treinta hombres y sus sombras (1949), short stories; El Camino de El Dorado (1947, repr. 1997), a fictionalized biography of Lope de AguirreAguirre, Lope de
, c.1510–1561, Spanish rebel and adventurer in colonial South America. He was often involved in violence and sedition before joining (1560) the expedition of Pedro de Ursúa down the Marañón and the Amazon.

Born May 16, 1906, in Caracas. Venezuelan writer, critic, and sociologist.

After joining the student movement in 1928, Uslar Pietri was subjected to persecution by the dictatorial regime then in power. From 1939 to 1945 he occupied various ministerial posts. From 1946 to 1951 he was a professor of Latin American literature at Columbia Univeristy (USA), and in 1950 he became a professor at Central University in Caracas. He founded the avant-garde journal Viernes.

Uslar Pietri’s collection Barabbas and Other Stories was written in the spirit of costumbrismo. Realistic depictions of nature are presented in the short-story collections The Net (1936) and Thirty Men and Their Shadows (1949). Uslar Pietri is the author of the historical novels The Red Lances (1931) and The Road of El Dorado (1948). His novels A Portrait in Geography (1962) and The Time of the Mask (1964) are drawn from modern Venezuelan life. Uslar Pietri also wrote works on literary history.
