vertebral plexus

vertebral plexus

1. An autonomic nerve plexus that runs along each vertebral artery and carries sympathetic axons to arteries inside the skull.2. Any of the anastomosing networks of valveless veins draining the vertebral column and spinal cord. Outside the spinal canal, anterior vertebral plexuses lie in front of the vertebral bodies, while posterior plexuses surround the vertebral spines and other vertebral processes. Inside the spinal canal, dense vertebral plexuses run between the bone and the dura; at the top of the cord, the internal vertebral plexuses communicate with intracranial sinuses. See also: plexus
