ribs The flat, curved bones that form a protective cage for the chest organs and provide the means of varying the volume of the chest so as to effect respiration. There are 12 pairs of ribs, and each pair articulates with a vertebra in the spine, at the back. The upper 10 pairs are joined to cartilages connected to the breastbone at the front, but the 11th and 12th pairs are free at the front (floating ribs).RIBS
