Single-Armature Converter

Converter, Single-Armature

an electrical machine for converting alternating current to direct current (or the reverse). In contrast to an adjustable voltage system, the single-armature converter functions both as a motor and a generator simultaneously, owing to the special design of its armature. Used extensively until the mid-20th century in traction substations, it is being replaced by mercury arc and semiconductor power rectifiers.
