Richard Christopher Carrington

Carrington, Richard Christopher

Born May 26, 1826, in London; died Nov. 27, 1875, in Churt, Surrey. British astronomer.

Carrington graduated from Cambridge University in 1848. His major works dealt with the study of the sun. Carrington determined the elements of the sun’s rotation and the systematic increase in the period of rotation with heliographic latitude. He proposed a hypothetical initial meridian for reading heliographic latitudes.
