Richardson, James

Born Nov. 3, 1806, in Boston, England; died Mar. 4, 1851, in Kukawa, near Lake Chad. English explorer of Africa.

In 1845 and 1846, Richardson journeyed across the Sahara and was the first European to reach the oasis of Ghat, traveling from Tripoli via Ghudamis. From 1849 to 1851 he led an expedition deep into Africa, in the course of which he traveled from Tunis to Tripoli and then across the Sahara, through Marzuq, Ghat, and Agadez. Richardson’s explorations were continued by his companions H. Barth and A. Overweg.
