AnthusAnthusa genus of birds of the family Motacillidae of the order Passeriformes. The body length measures 14–20 cm. The coloration is brownish with spots. There are about 30 species. The Anthus are widely distributed—from the subarctic to the subantarctic belts; they are absent only from New Guinea and the islands of Oceania. Most live in open places, such as tundras, steppes, and high-mountain meadows (up to 4,200 m above sea level); a few live in forest meadows and on the edges of forests. Their nests are on the ground; four to six eggs are laid per clutch. In the USSR there are nine species: Richard’s pipit (A. richardi), Godlevskii’s pipit (A. godlewskii), tawny pipit (A. campestris), tree pipit (A. trivialis), Indian tree pipit (A. hogsoni), meadow pipit (A. pratensis), red-throated pipit (A. cervinus), Pechora pipit (A. gustavi), and water pipit (A. spinolettd). The Anthus feed on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates. Anthus
