synovia a transparent viscid lubricating fluid, secreted by the membrane lining joints, tendon sheaths, etc. Synovia (also synovial fluid), in anatomy, a transparent yellowish viscid fluid contained in joint cavities and synovial sheaths and bursae. Synovia, which is produced by the synovial membrane, moistens the joint (cartilaginous) surfaces of bones and the internal membrane of the articular capsule. The fluid is called synovia because it resembles egg white in consistency and external appearance. Found in joints in very small quantities, synovia reduces friction between joint surfaces during movements and prevents the wearing away of joint cartilages. synovia[sə′nō·vē·ə] (physiology) synovial fluid synovia
