Tomoji, Abe

ABE. Born June 26, 1903. Japanese writer, critic, and translator.

Tomoji’s first significant work was the novel Winter Refuge (1936). He belonged to the Shinkogeijutsu-ha group, an aesthetic school opposed to proletarian literature. The basic theme of Abe Tomoji’s works is the spiritual life of the intelligentsia (the novel Blizzard, 1938), particularly of young people, in the period after World War II (the novels Spring Night, 1949; Black Shadow, 1950; and so on). He did translations of English literature.
