acceleration phase A period of increasing growth before the log-growth phase in a bacterial culture; the first division to occur during lag marks the end of the lag phase and the beginning of the acceleration phase, during which all cells capable of dividing will divide and all have acclimated to divide at the maximum rate afforded by the growth conditions.
