Traugutt, Romuald

Born Jan. 28, 1826, in Szostakow; died Aug. 5,1864, in Warsaw. Figure in the Polish movement for national liberation.

Traugutt served in the Russian military from 1845 to 1862 and fought in the Crimean War (1853–56). From April to July 1863, during the Polish Uprising of 1863–64, he led an insurgent detachment. He was sent abroad by the Rzad Narodowy on an inspection mission in August 1863. On Oct. 17, 1863, he became head of the Rzad Narodowy and took forceful measures to radicalize the movement, fortify and organize the insurgent forces, and restore ties with revolutionaries in other countries. Traugutt was arrested on Apr. 11,1864, and executed in accordance with a sentence of the tsarist court.
