Adzhzi

(pseudonym of Khodzhi Said-Akhmed-khodzha Siddiki). Born 1865, in Samarkand; died 1926. Tadzhik poet and teacher; one of the representatives of dzhadidism. Adzhzi wrote in Farsi, Turkish, and Arabic. He was a craftsman.

Adzhzi visited Tiflis and Baku, and became acquainted with Azerbaijani theater; he felt the influence of the Azerbaijani satirist Sabir. He contributed to the dzhadid periodicals Bukhorai sharif (Noble Bukhara, 1912–1913), Oina (1913–15), and others. His major works are Mirror of Example (1913), Assemblage of the Spirits (1913), and Treasury of Wisdom (1914). After the October Revolution he carried on his teaching and published satirical verse. He translated the works of N. V. Gogol, I. S. Turgenev, and others into Tadzhik.
