Synthesis Gas

synthesis gas

[′sin·thə·səs ‚gas] (chemical engineering) A mixture of gases prepared as feedstock for a chemical reaction, for example, carbon monoxide and hydrogen to make hydrocarbons or organic chemicals, or hydrogen and nitrogen to make ammonia. Also known as syngas.

Synthesis Gas

a synthetic gas produced by the gasification of solid fuels in gas generators into which a mixture of oxygen and steam can be blown. Ideally, synthesis gas contains 66 percent CO and 34 percent H2 by volume; however, under real conditions it also contains such components as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane. Synthesis gas is used in industry mainly as a raw material in chemical processing. Its high cost of production relative to other gases makes its use as a fuel economically unfeasible.
