Van Buren, Steve

(1920– ) football player; born in La Ceiba, Honduras. Although known for his blocking at Louisiana State University, he proved a bruising, all-pro runner for the Philadelphia Eagles. He led the National Football League in rushing four times (1945, 1947–49), becoming the first man to run for over 1,000 yards in two different seasons. His powerful rushes helped his team win league championships in 1948 and 1949.
