Tunis, Gulf of

an inlet of the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily and the Tunisian coast. It is 148 km wide at its narrowest point. Depths in the trough that crosses the gulf from northwest to southeast are 300–800 m; the greatest depths (about 1,000–1,200 m) are found at the entrances to the gulf from the north and southeast. There are many shoals. The island of Pantellaria is located in the Gulf of Tunis.
