synthetic nonabsorbable suture

synthetic nonabsorbable suture

Surgery An inert suture material that is stronger than wire, that minimizes 'spitting' but does not 'handle' as well as silk; NSs are required for cardiovascular surgery as they must function indefinitely; vascular anastomoses using prothetic grafts and NSs may lead to aneurysm formation. See Surgical closure. Cf Absorbable suture.
