Siniavino

an urban-type settlement in Kirovsk Raion, Leningrad Oblast, RSFSR. Siniavino is located 9-10 km from the southwestern shore of Lake Ladoga and 16 km from the Mga railroad station. Peat is excavated in the area.

In early September 1941, Siniavino was captured by fascist German troops as they broke through to the southwestern shore of Lake Ladoga. In September 1941 and especially from August to September 1942 bitter fighting took place in the area in connection with the attempts made by Soviet troops to run the blockade of Leningrad. In January 1943 the blockade was broken north of Siniavino, which had been turned by the Germans into a powerful base. After fierce fighting, Siniavino was liberated in September 1943.
