Vladimir Levit

Levit, Vladimir Semenovich

Born Jan. 4 (16), 1883, in the village of Talalaevka, now Cherkassy Oblast; died June 29, 1961, in Moscow. Soviet surgeon; Honored Scientist of the RSFSR in 1936; major general in the medical service.

In 1906, Levit graduated from the department of medicine of the University of Kharkov. From 1926 to 1953 he was chief of the subdepartment of hospital surgery of the Second Moscow State University (from 1930, the Second Moscow Medical Institute). During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 he was deputy chief surgeon of the Soviet Army. In 1928 he was the first in the USSR to perform a resection of the cardial portion of the stomach because of cancer; he developed original methods of treating gunshot wounds of the extremities and thorax.
