Artur Iachevskii

Iachevskii, Artur Arturovich

Born Jan 23 (Feb. 4), 1863, in the village of Ryl’kovo, Gzhatsk District, Smolensk Province; died Feb. 12, 1932, in Leningrad. Soviet botanist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (from 1923).

In 1896, Iachevskii joined the staff of the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden. He founded the garden’s Central Phytopathological Station, directing it from the time of its establishment, in 1902, until 1905. In 1907, Iachevskii organized and headed the Bureau of Mycology and Phytopathology in the Department of Agriculture (today the A. A. Iachevskii Laboratory of Mycology of the All-Union Institute of Plant Protection of the Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences). Beginning in 1904 he was a professor at several institutions of higher learning in St. Petersburg.

Iachevskii’s chief works deal with the systematics and phytogeny of fungi and with fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases of plants. He was the author of the first Russian manual on fungi (1897). He also compiled the Information Yearbook on Diseases and Infections of Cultivated and Wild Useful Plants (vols. 1–7, 1904–17).
