R0240400 (rē-ĕl′), Louis 1844-1885. Canadian insurgent leader who organized the Métis settlers of the Red River valley in a rebellion over land rights (1869-1870) that resulted in establishment of the province of Manitoba. He later led the North-West Rebellion in Saskatchewan (1885) but surrendered to Canadian authorities and was executed.
