Ullas, Nikolai

Born Jan. 14 (27), 1914, in Smolensk. Soviet architect and city planner. People’s Architect of the USSR (1975). Member of the CPSU from 1942.

Ullas studied at the Moscow Architectural Institute under N. A. Ladovskii and N. Ia. Kolli from 1932 to 1936. During that same period he worked in the studio of I. A. Fomin. In 1951, Ullas joined the faculty of the institute; he was made a professor there in 1967.

Many of Ullas’ major works are in Moscow. He, in collaboration with others, was responsible for the general plan for the southwestern section of Moscow (1948-54), the plan and construction of Frunze Esplanade and Komsomol’skii Prospect (1948-56), the reconstruction of the Moscow State University area (1950-51) and of the V. I. Lenin Central Stadium (1955-56; Lenin Prize, 1959), and the plan and construction of the Matveevskoe residential district (construction begun in 1966). Ullas also participated in drawing up the new master plan for Moscow (for the period 1966-85) and helped design a bridge for the Moscow Canal on the Leningrad Highway (1968-72). He has been awarded five orders and various medals.
