Riga Operation of 1944

 

an offensive operation conducted by the troops of the First, Second, and Third Baltic fronts between Sept. 14 and Oct. 15, 1944, during the Great Patriotic War (1941–45) to wipe out the fascist German forces in the Soviet Baltic region. As a result of the Riga Operation, Soviet forces inflicted a severe defeat on the forces of Army Group North and liberated a large part of the Latvian SSR and its capital, Riga. The Riga Operation was part of the Baltic Operation of 1944.
