Vegetable Growing, Institute of

(full name, Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Growing; NIIOKh), an institute of vegetable growing that was organized in 1930. Located in the city of Mytishchi, Moscow Oblast (since 1955). The institute has (1973) nine research departments and an experimental design bureau for the mechanization of vegetable raising. Affiliated with the institute are the Adler Vegetable Experiment Station (Krasnodar Krai), the Bykovo Melon Experiment Station (Volgograd Oblast), the Biriuchekutskaia Vegetable-selection Experiment Station (Rostov Oblast), the Voronezh Vegetable Experiment Station (Voronezh Oblast), the Western Siberian Vegetable-Potato Experiment Station (Altai Krai), and the Krasnodar Vegetable-Potato Experiment Station (the city of Krasnodar). The institute has six research and development sites and two experimental production farms: the Perlovskaia Farm (Mytishchi Raion) and the Bykovo Farm (Ramenskoe Raion) in Moscow Oblast.

The Institute of Vegetable Growing conducts research on the effectiveness of specialization and on the best combinations of agricultural production. It has worked out procedures for raising vegetable harvests and has developed and improved more than 200 high-yielding varieties of vegetables and melons. The institute has a graduate program and offers graduate correspondence courses. Since 1948 it has published Sborniki nauchnykh trudov (Collections of Scientific Works).
