Vegetable Seed Drill

a machine for the uniform sowing of vegetable seed in a definite system. In the USSR, the SKOSSh-2.8, SKON-4.2 and SON-2.8A mounted seed drills are used. Each machine was designed taking into consideration the particular needs of the country’s various vegetable-growing regions. The seed drills have seed boxes with adjustable outlets to regulate the quantity of seed to be sown, manure spreaders (except the SON-2.8A), markers with a blocking device, press wheels, and disk colters with rims that make it possible to adjust the sowing depth. Some machines have runners. For sowing nonrunning seed, rocking agitators are installed over the sowing mechanism.

The SKON-4.2 vegetable drill sows according to the systems (in cm) 45 × 6, 60 × 6, 70 × 6, and (50 + 90) × 3. Its working width is 2.1–4.2 m, and its productivity is 1.4—2 hectares (ha) per hr. The SKOSSh-2.8 machine sows according to the systems (in cm) 45 × 6, 60 × 4, 70 × 4, (20 + 50) × 3, (60 + 80) × 2, and (95 + 45) × 2. Its working width is 2.1–2.8 m, and its productivity is 1–1.4 ha per hr. The SON-2.8A seed drill sows according to the systems (in cm) 45 × 6, 60 × 4, 70 × 4, and 90 × 3. Its working width is 2.4–2.8 m, and its productivity is 0.9–1.4 ha per hr.

Vegetable seed drills are operated by the tractor driver. Seed drills involving similar sowing systems are used outside the USSR.
