atypical depression (1) A subtype of major depression which is characterised by retention of mood reactivity (the ability to respond positively to positive events), in contrast to those with "melancholy", who cannot. The condition typically has an earlier age of onset than typical depression, is more likely to affect women than men, and shares some features with bipolar disorder.
