Sysin, Aleksei Nikolaevich

 

Born Oct. 4 (16), 1879, in Nizhny Novgorod, now Gorky; died June 25, 1956, in Moscow. Participant in the revolutionary-democratic movement. One of the founders of hygiene in the USSR and an organizer of the public health epidemiologic service. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944).

In 1908, Sysin graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow University. He was chairman of the Public Health Bureau of the All-Russian Union of Cities from 1915 to 1918. From 1918 to 1932 he was head of the department of public health and epidemiology of the People’s Commissariat for Public Health of the RSFSR. He drew up the draft of the 1922 decree On the Public Health Bodies of the Republic. In 1922 he became a professor at the First Moscow State University. From 1931 to 1951, Sysin was head of the subdepartment of community hygiene at the Central Institute for the Advanced Training of Physicians, and from 1944 to 1956 he was also director of the Institute of General and Community Hygiene of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, which was named in his honor in 1957. He founded the journal Gigiena i epidemiologiia (Hygiene and Epidemiology) in 1922.

Sysin’s main works were on water supply, hygiene of dwellings, public health and epidemiologic conditions in the country, disinfection, and acclimatization of man. In 1926 he became permanent representative of the USSR to the Paris-based International Bureau for Public Hygiene.

Sysin was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
