Warsaw, Grand Duchy of

a vassal state within the system of Napoleonic France, formed under the Treaty of Tilsit of 1807 from part of the Polish lands taken from Prussia. In 1809, Polish lands taken from Austria were added to the duchy. The Grand Duchy of Warsaw was the base for the French army during its incursion into Russia in 1812. By a decision of the Congress of Vienna of 1814-15 the territory of the duchy was divided among Russia, Austria, and Prussia, except for the city of Kraków and its environs, which became a republic under the protection of the three countries.
