Washakie

Washakie

(?1804–1900) Shoshone chief; born in the Green River Valley of present-day eastern Utah and southern Wyoming. He assisted early trappers, traders, and settlers, and fought with the U.S.A. in their wars with the Sioux and other tribes that had been traditional enemies of the Shoshone. In 1868 he exchanged Shoshone lands for a reservation at Wind River, Wyo. He served as a chief through the 1870s. The epitaph on his grave is most telling: "Always loyal to the Government and to his white brothers."
