Washburn, Emory

(1800–77) legal scholar; born in Leicester, Mass. He taught at Harvard Law School (1855–76), served on the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1826–27, 1838, 1876–77), and was governor of Massachusetts (1853–54). He wrote several important books including, Judicial History of Massachusetts (1840), Treatise on the American Law of Real Property (1862), and Lectures on the Study and Practice of the Law (1871).
