On the northeastern border of NC, northeast of Asheville; organized Jan 27, 1849 from Ashe, Caldwell, Wilkes, and Yancey counties. Name Origin: For the Watauga River, which runs through the county; from the Indian word probably meaning 'beautiful water.'
