Wauchope, Robert

(1909–79) archaeologist, anthropologist; born in Columbia, S.C. He was the influential director of the Middle American Research Institute, Tulane University (1942–75). A specialist in Latin American prehistory and the archaeology of the American Southwest, he wrote such important works as House Mounds of Uaxactun (1934) and edited the comprehensive Handbook of Middle American Indians (16 vols. 1964–76).
