(hĕ`dyo͞oī), Gallic people, occupying in the 1st cent. B.C. a part of what later became Burgundy. Defeated by AriovistusAriovistus
, fl. 58 B.C., Germanic chieftain, leader of the Suebi. He crossed the Rhine c.71 B.C., defeated the Aedui, and came to dominate much of Gaul (see Gallic Wars). In 60 B.C.

Aedui

 

an ancient Celtic tribe inhabiting the area between the Saône and Loire rivers in Gaul; their central city was Bibracte. As a result of Caesar’s Gallic campaigns (58–51 B.C.), the area settled by the Aedui was conquered by the Romans and incorporated into the Gallic provinces of Rome. From 16 B.C., it was part of Gallia Lugdunensis.
