Weaver, Robert

(1924– ) illustrator; born in Pittsburgh, Pa. Considered the forerunner of modern expressive illustrators, he studied at Carnegie Tech (Pittsburgh) and in Italy (1949–51), and worked as an illustrator for such periodicals as Fortune, Esquire, Life and Playboy. He influenced many commercial artists and is known for his innovative use of multiple images, as in Jason Robards Rehearsing Huey (1982).

A member of President Franklin Roosevelt's informal "Black Cabinet" (1933–42), he became a New York housing commissioner (1954–59) and Federal Housing Agency administrator (1961–66), coauthoring The Dilemma of Urban America (1965). As President Lyndon Johnson's secretary of housing and urban development (1966–69)—the first African-American cabinet member in U.S. history—he promoted "demonstration cities" funding. He then became president of Bernard Baruch College in New York City.
