Weems, Ted

Weems, Ted (b. Wilfred Theodore Weymes)

(1901–63) bandleader; born in Pitcairn, Pa. He played trombone in college and with his own band had a first hit record with "Somebody Stole My Gal" (1923). The band toured the Midwest and settled in Chicago in 1929. He became popular on radio and recorded many hits throughout the 1930s. After serving in World War II he formed a successful new band, but his popularity eventually declined and in the 1950s he worked as a disc jockey and band agent.
