Weeping

 

in plants, the secretion of sap from a cut in a stem or from a spot where the stem has been injured. Weeping is caused by root pressure. In herbaceous plants, weeping may occur throughout the vegetative period; in trees it occurs primarily in the spring. An increase in weeping is observed during the daylight hours. After an injury to the stem, an herbaceous plant secretes sap usually for several days, a woody plant for up to 40 days, and some tropical palms and agaves for several months. (SeeGUTTATION.)
