Wegenerisen
Wegenerisen
(Wegener plateau), a part of the continen- tal antarctic ice shield in the central area of Queen Maud Land (Eastern Antarctica). Its elevation is over 3,000 m, and the thickness of the ice cover varies from 1,000 to 3,000 m. The Mühlig-Hofmann and Russian mountains and the Wohlthat massif separate the Wegener plateau from the lit- toral. The German expedition of A. Ritscher discovered the plateau (1938-39) and named it in honor of the German geophysicist A. Wegener. The participants of the 12th Soviet antarctic expedition carried out the first surface route research on the plateau in 1967, completing a sled and tractor journey along the route from Molodezhnaia Station to Novolazarevskaia Station by way of the pole of inaccessibility.
