Wehlau, Treaty of (1657)

(Wehlau-Bydgoszcz Treaty), a treaty between Poland and Brandenburg during the Northern War of 1655-60. It was concluded in the form of two separate acts, that of September 19 in Wehlau and that of November 6 in Bydgoszcz. It provided for Brandenburg, instead of Poland, having sovereign rights to eastern Prussia. Poland gave the Brandenburg prince feudal control of Bytów and Lçbork, the western coastal region. The prince was obliged to break the 1655 ant-Polish alliance he had concluded with Sweden and grant Poland 6,000 men for a war against Sweden. The Treaty of Wehlau significantly strengthened the position of the Brandenburg-Prussian state.
