Location:3 miles southeast of Clinton, in DeWitt County.
Facilities:75 Class A campsites (electrical hookups, shower building, pittoilets), 9 Class C sites, tent, backpack, large group, and youthcamping areas, picnic areas, shelters, restrooms, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, fishingplatforms, boat ramp, boat rentals, concession stand, 2 outdooramphitheaters, restaurant, historic site, museum/interpretive center,visitor center.
Activities:Camping, boating (electric motors only), fishing, hiking,backpacking, wildlife viewing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, sledding, tobogganing,interpretive programs.
Special Features:Between 1901 and 1921, the property was the site of an annual gatheringknown as the Chautauqua Assembly. For ten days each summer, arearesidents created a temporary tent city as they came to hear some ofthe best public speakers and entertainers of the day. Representingevery field of interest, programs were presented for the entertainment,education, and "moral elevation" of the participants. Among the manyspeakers were former President William Taft, Vice President AdlaiStevenson, William Jennings Bryan, evangelist Sam Jones, Rev. BillySunday, Helen Keller, and Carrie Nation.
